Post Treatment Care Of Your Root Canal

Root Canal Therapy

Most root canal treatments are completed in one visit.  Today the nerve and the blood vessels as well as any infection in the tooth have been removed.  The tooth has been disinfected and permanent filler has been placed in the root.

It is normal to experience some tenderness and sensitivity for 5-7 days after root canal therapy.  Avoid chewing on the treated tooth for this time for it will feel tender to pressure.  Any uninitiated pain should subside within 48 hours and can be controlled with Advil and Tylenol.  If the tooth feels "high" on your bite, or in other words, you cannot close your teeth together without pain, please call our office.  This is different than tenderness to chewing food.  You should be able to close your teeth together without food in your mouth and not experience pain.

If you experience swelling that is increasing over 24 to 48 hours, please call our office. (972)727-4468

Congratulations, you have chosen to have treatment that has saved an otherwise hopeless tooth.  Proper care can increase the likelihood of this tooth lasting a lifetime.
